About the Business
All trees cut are between 200 and 400 years old. At Homewood Houses, Sue and Rudy understand oak and will advise you on fitting, finishing and any other technical questions you may have. Homewood Houses is a family run business with over 30 years’ experience in grading and purchasing French Oak.
Forests in France are very well managed. The Ministry of Waters and Forestry makes sure that cut-down areas are replanted. In fact the forested surface in France is growing every year, unlike several other countries in Europe.
After being sawn we air dry the boards for at least six months (depending on the seasons), then kiln dry them down to 10% before machining them into floorboards. We pride ourselves on the high standard of machining. All flooring is tongued and grooved on four sides.
Rudy, who has spent a lifetime in timber, carefully selects all our timber, and oversees the whole process from forest to floor, ensuring that there are no shortcuts and that the oak reaches us in the best possible condition.
Taking around a year before it reaches us, the oak is air dried for at least six months (depending on the season), then kiln dried down to 8-10% moisture content before being precision machined into floorboards with tongue and groove on all four sides.
